Traveling to Cherry Grove

May 24th, 2011

NEW COPY TO COME

You’ve heard about the idyllic beaches, the fabulous night life and the amazing sunsets and now you’d like to see Cherry Grove for yourself.  Here’s how to get to fabulous Fire Island!

Background: Fire Island is a barrier island, 27 miles or so long, that shelters parts of Long Island.  From where you arrive, you can walk from the bay to the beach in less than two minutes.  There are few vehicles on the island and in Cherry Grove, there are no bicycles.  Not a problem, since you can walk from the East side of the community to the West side in less than 20 minutes.  Punctuated by the downtown area that is roughly central, this is where you’ll find the grocery store, restaurants, shops and real estate offices and our tiny historic post office.

Cherry Grove is pet-friendly, but make certain to keep your dog on a leash.  There’s an ordinance that is enforced by the Suffolk County Police who regularly patrol the beach and the boardwalk.
There’s only one way to get to Fire Island itself, and that’s via Sayville Ferry Service.  It’s just about a 20 minute ride across the Great South Bay and watching the sunset from the upper deck of the boat is one of the summer’s great pleasures.  Better still, waiting to greet your friends as they come across to share a sunset is phenomenal.

By Car – all roads lead to Sayville, once you’re on Long Island.  Program your GPS for 41 River Road, Sayville, NY and you will find your way through the town itself to the Ferry embarking point.  There is daily parking right across the street, and if you have a lot of luggage you may want to drop it with a friend before finding a parking spot.  Otherwise you could be carrying a lot of stuff over a large parking lot.
By Bus – Islanders Travel (http://www.islanderstravel.com/bus.html) runs bus service to Fire Island.  Visit their website for more details.

By Train – New Jersey Transit and PATH Trains connect with Long Island Railroad at Penn Station in New York.  Peak fares between New York Penn and Sayville are collected between 6am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm and run $16.25 when purchased at Penn or a ticket machine.  There will be a premium if you pay on board – the cost will be $22.00.  Off peak fares are $11.75 and are charged on weekends and holidays so if you leave right after work Friday and come home Sunday your fare would be $28 for the LIRR.

If you are arriving by train you can walk to the Ferry port, but most people take the jitney.  The fee is a few bucks each way and it pays to pack light.  Besides, you’ll wear your bathing suit and little else all weekend!

Queen Beach DeBree as Camp Nurse

What were you thinking? Questionnaire

DATE:       March 2011
NAME:  Queen Beach DeBree as Camp Nurse for the 2011 In-Town Party

I love what you are wearing.  Tell me about your outfit.

Well of course I need a pure white uniform at all times for my duties as the official nurse tending to the needs and desires of Cherry Grove campers.  And I do love to accessorize!  My handbag, for instance, is specially designed to hold “unusual liquids”.

Camp Nurse:  “Speaking of which, I will need to collect a sample.  Can you do it now??

Me:  Sorry nurse, but I’m the one asking the questions here, NOT you!  Back to my questions and NO, you may not have a sample.

Very Interesting!  Who is the designer?

I don’t remember the particular designer… it might be Jean Paul Gautier.  But I definitely shop the “Big & Tall” dress section for my uniforms!

What were you thinking when you got dressed today?

I just felt like freshening up in a tidy new white uniform after my trips abroad, first on my Haiti mission and then tending to the needs of our troops all over the world… exhausting work, you know!  And again, fee free to admire my accessories!

Me:  You are a saint!

Any other thoughts you would like to share with the Arts Project and our readers?

Yes!  I want to share my sincere gratitude to everyone in the Grove for all of their love and support… as camp nurse I take my duties seriously and am here to take care of your every need!

In Town Party 2010

May 24th, 2011

by Sylvia Shapiro

Darlings- Although the summer hasn’t started yet, the board of directors of the Arts Project of Cherry Grove pulled off their first triumph of the coming season: The In Town Party. It was held at the Gay and Lesbian Center in the village and it was all very gay. I mean that literally as well as figuratively. To announce the theme for the season, “The Greatest Shows on Earth”. The walls were decorated with vintage circus posters. Each table was done up in a different brightly colored table cloth with center pieces consisting of huge pop corn buckets. The buckets were filled with peanuts, cotton candy, toys and all kinds of circus treats. Multi colored balloons attached to the centerpieces floated above the tables….and darlings; they even had calliope music playing…Too Betty Hutton!

The open bar served the usual brunch cocktails, mimosas, bloody marys and my particular favorite, straight vodka. The food was too divine. Fresh fruit, French toast, glazed smoked ham, home fries, choice of omelets, assorted rolls, muffins, bagels and Danish. The big surprise at the end of the brunch was everyone was served ice cream cones in their choice of flavors…Too delicious!

The room was simply bursting with people eager to see some old friends and quite a few new faces. Of course, the buzz was going around about the upcoming season and some of the events the Arts Project board has planned. I’ll go into that in detail in my next communiqué. But, just to tease you a bit: Tommy Tune appearing on our community house stage?….Too terpsichorean! Casino night in the Pines?…Too exciting! No, no darlings that’s all you’re going to hear from these jungle red lips. Do watch out website for all the fabulous events to come.

Until next time……Love Love Love Sylvia Shapiro
